FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Mar. 30, 2010) - The Nova Southeastern softball team returned to its winning ways by taking both games of a double-header against the Florida Southern Mocs at home Tuesday evening. The Sharks (29-12, 7-4 SSC) won the first game, 6-1 and shutout the Mocs (19-14, 5-6 SSC) in the second game, 6-0.
"They did a great job of taking care of business," said Head Coach Lesa Boneè. "I'm proud of our girls for bouncing back from such a rough week."
Lauren Lopez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) led the way in the opening game by scoring half of NSU's runs. She scored three times and batted 2-for-3 in the game with a perfect on base percentage. She also had three putouts and four assists at the shortstop position. Jessica Hernandez (Sr., Miami, Fla.) and Dana Bergner (Sr., Palm Harbour, Fla.) also had multiple hit games and two RBI.
Dani Caron (Sr., Wellington, Fla.) had a great all around performance in the final game of the day. She hit 2-for-3 with two doubles and a game-high three RBI. In the circle, Caron pitched a complete game shutout while only allowing three hits and one walk. Her effort pushed her record to a team-best 12-3.
Coming off a five game skid, the Sharks started the first game off on a good note by taking the lead in the first inning. With two outs on the board, Lopez singled to left center field and was advanced home on Hernandez's double to left field.
FSC tied the game up in the third inning but the Sharks retook the lead with a three run fourth inning. Rachel Talenfeld (Jr., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Lopez led off the inning with singles before Hernandez drove in a run with her second double of the game. After two ground ball outs, Bergner drove both of her runs batted in with a single that put the Sharks up by three.
NSU would put up two more insurance runs in the sixth inning. Lopez led off the inning by reaching on an error and eventually scored on a muffed throw. Hernandez walked and was advanced around the bases on an error and a fielder's choice. The Shark defense retired three of the next four batters to win the game.
Devin Higginbotham (Jr., Palatka, Fla.) returned to the win column with an efficient performance. She held the Mocs to five hits and no earned runs. Higginbotham pitched the complete game while striking out three batters. Her record now stands at 7-3 overall.
The Sharks established a quick 2-0 lead in the second game by putting up one run in the first and second innings. Noemi Luciani (Sr., Miami, Fla.) led off the game with a single through the left side and was advanced home off a single from Hernandez. Caron batted in her first run in the second inning by advancing Brittney Lamb (Sr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) home with a double to left field.
Caron would strike again in the fourth inning by driving in two runs. Laura Saladrigas (Fr., Hollywood, Fla.) led off the side with a single and was pushed to second off of a Lamb sacrifice hit. Bergner singled up the middle before Caron advanced both runners home with a double to right center field.
The Sharks capped off their score with two runs in the fifth inning. Lopez kicked off the side with a single and was immediately driven home by Hernandez who doubled to center field. Lamb earned her first hit of the game and drove home Hernandez with a single through the left side. Lamb was a perfect 1-for-1 with a walk and a sacrifice bunt in the final game.
The Sharks will complete their home series against Florida Southern tomorrow at 4 pm.
